Spatial Effect of Provincial-level Free Trade Zone Pilot Policy on Urban Economic Growth
This paper presents an empirical study on the impact of Free Trade Zone(FTZ)pilot policies on urban economic growth and their spatial spillover effects based on a the spatial difference-in-differences econometric model according to the panel data of 220 cities at prefecture level and above in 21 provincial-level FTZs established in 2006-2020.The results show that:1)The pilot policies of FTZs can promote the economic growth of the pilot cities through two pathways,namely,opening-up and innovation spillover.2)both of these pathways have strong spatial spillover, reflecting the characteristic of"leading from the point to the surface"and driving the growth of the whole area of provincial-level FTZs.3)The policy effect of FTZ pilot policies and their spatial spillover is positively influenced by the area of FTZ.Accordingly, this paper argues that it should continue to increase the implementation of China's FTZ strategy, optimize the spatial layout, enhance the innovation capacity and improve the park construction, and promote the high-quality development of the regional economy.
