Spatial Evolution and Developmental Performance of Town-level Digital Economy:Evidence from Jiangsu Province Based on the Township Data
Based on the list of Taobao town in China, the nighttime light index and the LandScan global population database, this paper uses the panel fixed effect model and the difference-in-differences model to explore the spatial evolution and developmental performance of town-level digital economy in Jiangsu Province from 2013 to 2021.The empirical results show that:1)In terms of spatial evolution, the town-level digital economy presents an obvious near-field diffusion trend, and the closer the distance, the stronger the spillover effect of the digital economy. However, when the development of the digital economy in surrounding towns is too strong,it will also inhibit the development of the digital economy of the local town.2)In terms of developmental performance, the development of digital economy can significantly promote the economic performance and population growth of towns. After becoming Taobao town, the nighttime light brightness and total population of towns increased by 38.811%and 20.558%respectively compared with the overall means. These findings not only have important theoretical significance for understanding the spatial evolution of the town-level digital economy, but also provide a useful reference for formulating reasonable township development policies.
