Level Measurement,Spatial Differentiation and Influencing Factors of Competitive Urbanization in China
Urbanization is a fundamental driver of economic development and social progress, and the transition from accelerated urbanization to high-quality urbanization with a focus on qualitative improvement and increased efficiency is an imperative step towards realizing Chinese-style modernization. This study systematically formulates a competitive urbanization development model based on the empirical evidence of rapid urbanization in China.Taking 298 prefecture-level and above cities of China, this paper uses the entropy-weight method to measure the degree of competitive urbanization in 2006-2021 and analyzes the characteristics and influencing factors of its pattern evolution. The results show that:1)The competitive mode of China's competitive urbanization has shifted from land-oriented competition to capital-oriented competition.2)Cities with high-level competitive urbanization are distributed in the eastern coastal regions,Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei,Yangtze River Delta,Pearl River Delta, and Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomerations.3)Among the four major urban agglomerations, the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is the leader in terms of competitive urbanization level, while the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration is catching up with the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, and the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration is at the lowest level.4)Beijing,Tianjin,Shanghai and Chongqing,as well as Suzhou in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, consistently rank at the top in terms of competitive urbanization level, while Xi'an and Chengdu have ranked higher in recent years.5)Factors such as economic growth pressure, officials'promotion pressure, the degree of fiscal decentralization and the level of economic development exacerbate competitive urbanization, while a higher degree of industrialization can mitigate the progress of competitive urbanization. This paper provides theoretical and empirical insights to analyze China's rapid urbanization practice and promote high-quality urbanization in the process of China's modernization.
