Can E-commerce Reduce Rural Household Poverty Vulnerability?A Quasi-natural Experiment Based on the National E-commerce into Rural Areas Comprehensive Demonstration Project
Based on China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)data from 2013 to 2019,this pa-per takes the National E-commerce into Rural Areas Comprehensive Demonstration Project as a quasi-natural experiment and empirically studies the impact of this project on rural households'vulnerability to poverty using a multi-time-point difference-in-differences(DID)model.The re-sults show that the project can significantly reduce the poverty vulnerability of rural households. The mechanism analysis shows that the important channels for this project to play a role are to im-prove farmers'agricultural income, increase farmers'agricultural production value, promote hu-man capital accumulation, and narrow the digital divide of rural households.Heterogeneity anal-ysis shows that the project has a more significant easing effect on the poverty vulnerability of rural households with low material capital, low human capital, and low social capital, indicating that the project has good inclusiveness.
