"Contract"Clan and Contract Spirit:A Perspective of Military Families in the Ming Dynasty
Exploring the decisive factors of economic growth in historical and cultural traditions is not only one of the key issues of economic historians but also of realistic significance for under-standing China's economic miracle since the reform and opening up.By employing the policy of Ming Garrisons, this paper found that the definition of rights and obligations between family members during the process of selecting the serving soldiers reflected a certain spirit of contract. This paper tries to employ the systematic historical data to explore the impact of this"contract"clan on the contemporary contract spirit. The benchmark regression shows that the proportion of the population of the military families does significantly affect the contemporary spirit of contract. The result is robust after using the frequency of war in the early Ming Dynasty as an instrumental variable. As a comparison, this paper does not find evidence of the impact of the traditional clan on the spirit of contract.
