Dual-Chain Core Innovation Path in the High-end Equipment Manufacturing Industry
The high-end equipment manufacturing(HEM)industry, often described as the"hardware that produces hardware",plays a pivotal role in supporting the development of various sectors of the national economy and ensuring national security. While the industry's potential for innovation is substantial, existing theoretical and empirical research remains limited, particularly regarding the internal mechanisms that drive innovation within the sector. This study, grounded in the knowledge recombination theory, develops a"dual-chain core innovation path"framework based on knowledge characteristics and search processes.Through expert interviews and field re-search,a patent database for the HEM industry was constructed, enabling a comprehensive em-pirical analysis. The findings reveal that the innovation trajectory of China's HEM industry differs significantly from that of developed countries.Specifically,China has established a"high-effi-ciency independent innovation path",characterized by high depth but low breadth, and a"sci-entific technology catch-up path",which begins with a distant search and narrows to a targeted local search based on national circumstances. The study provides objective evidence by compa-ring the core innovation paths between China and developed countries, reinforcing China's confi-dence in its development model and institutional framework. These findings offer valuable in-sights and strategic guidance for fostering future innovation in the HEM industry.
