This paper discusses the problems,reasons,and solutions related to measuring the quality of Chinese patents,based on which the trends of the quality of patent applications and au-thorization in China are comprehensively analyzed.This paper points out that there is an upward bias problem with renewal years;the way that Chinese patent citation data is recorded has resul-ted in significant truncation;and patent family size has an endogeneity problem and lacks of sam-ple representativeness.Furthermore,this paper proposes a series of solutions.This paper finds that the quality of patent applications in China has been deteriorating since the 21st century but the quality of granted patents has shown improvement,with patent examination serving as an effi-cient quality filter.This paper further discusses several salient patterns of patent application qual-ity.Finally,this paper discusses the prospects of research on innovation quality.
