Trust is a game process between the trustor and the trustee regarding how to distribute the trust target and its generated social surplus, which epitomizes their beliefs in property rights. This paper introduces the property rights source of the trust target into the trust game and reveals several key findings.First, trustees unconditionally respect property rights earned through effort, reciprocally respect those gained by luck(conditional on trustors'higher kindness),and disre-spect property rights acquired through deception.Second, people exhibit strong property claims and a strong desire to protect property from risks, regardless of whether the property is acquired through effort, luck,or deception. The property claims and the desire to protect property rights are the strongest for effort-earned property.Third, under the combined effects of property claims and willingness to protect property from risks, the trust level is the highest when the trust target is directly given by the experimenter, followed by when it comes from luck and deception, and is at the lowest when it comes from effort.
