How Intelligent Manufacturing Enhances Industrial Chain and Supply Chain Resilience:Theoretical Mechanisms and Empirical Tests
In the face of severe and complex domestic and international situations, enhancing the resilience of the industrial chain and supply chain is crucial for the safe and stable operation of China's economy. This effort is not only an urgent need for facilitating domestic and international dual circulation but also a strategic choice for shaping global com-petitive advantage and a strong support for constructing a modernized economic system. In the face of heightened uncer-tainty,the challenges of supply chain disruptions and bottlenecks have become increasingly critical, highlighting the ur-gent need to explore strategies for both"expanding"and"stabilizing"the supply chain.Fortunately, intelligent manufactur-ing is driving a revolution in manufacturing efficiency, reshaping systems, and facilitating paradigm shifts. This transfor-mation significantly impacts all aspects of production, distribution, circulation, and consumption, leading to changes in the roles of producers, the nature of production inputs, tools, and methods. It creates valuable opportunities to enhance supply chain resilience. This paper focuses on the behavior of micro entities and constructs a theoretical framework that includes the out-sourcing behavior of enterprises. This study systematically analyzes the significant role of intelligent manufacturing in ad-dressing supply chain inefficiencies, facilitating the expansion and stabilization of the supply chain, and enhancing the re-silience of the industrial chain and supply chain.Using data from listed companies between 2012 and 2022,it constructs indicators to comprehensively measure intelligent manufacturing in five dimensions:cognition, manpower, technology, service, and facilities and equipment.Empirical tests are conducted based on this theoretical framework, with data primar-ily derived from the CSMAR database. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows.Firstly, intelligent manufacturing not only expands the sources of enterprise supply but also greatly stabilizes the supply-demand relation, resulting in both"chain expansion"and"chain stabilization"effects, thereby effectively enhancing the resilience of the industrial chain and supply chain.Secondly, this paper finds that the"chain expansion"effect of Intelligent manufacturing is achieved by reducing coordination costs and in-creasing weak matching costs, while the"chain stabilization"effect is realized by promoting deeper coordination between supply and demand sides and reducing production costs.Consequently, the resilience-enhancing effect of intelligent manu-facturing on the supply chain exhibits heterogeneity. The"chain expansion"effect is more pronounced for enterprises with higher coordination costs and lower weak matching costs, such as those without political connections, high contracting costs, and low inventory ratios. At the same time, the"chain stabilization"effect is more significant for enterprises with higher production costs, such as those with high intermediate input costs and R&D expenses.Thirdly, further research in-dicates that under conditions of high economic policy uncertainty and enterprise uncertainty perception, the"chain expan-sion"and"chain stabilization"effects of intelligent manufacturing are amplified, thus mitigating the impact of external un-certainties on the supply chain and enhancing its risk resilience. This paper offers significant theoretical and practical insights. The findings of this paper reveal how intelligent manu-facturing affects"chain expansion"and"chain stabilization"from a micro perspective. This paper offers valuable insights for optimizing supply chain structures, strengthening resilience, and modernizing industrial and supply chains in the con-text of the current complex domestic and international situations and ongoing intelligent transformation. The findings indicate that leveraging the empowering role of intelligent manufacturing in the industrial chain and sup-ply chain requires close collaboration between the government and enterprises. On one hand, the government should align its policies with enterprise needs by designing a systematic, scientific, and reasonable incentive system, facilitating enter-prises in terms of policies, talents, and funding, thereby reducing the thresholds, costs, and risks associated with intelli-gent transformation. On the other hand, enhancing the resilience of the industrial chain and supply chain largely depends on establishing long-term collaborative relationships between enterprises and their suppliers.Companies should strengthen multidimensional cooperation with upstream and downstream partners, focusing on effectively aligning busi-ness processes, sharing resources openly, and fostering deep collaboration in research and innovation. They can build a collaborative innovation ecosystem that bolsters supply chain resilience against risks and disruptions by breaking down or-ganizational boundaries and unleashing the vitality of innovative elements such as capital, information, and technology.
