RTAs Deepening and GVC Embeddedness:An Empirical Study Distinguishing between General Trade and Processing Trade
Since the 1990s,the deepening of the international industrial specialization has led to the transformation of the traditional international trade pattern towards global value chain trade. The process of regional economic integration has acceler-ated,and regional trade agreements(RTAs)have gradually become an important means of international economic and trade coop-eration and integration of countries into global value chains. This paper constructs a depth index of RTAs from the levels of"cov-erage"and"implementation",and distinguishes between general trade and processing trade modes to explore how the depth of China's signed RTAs affects its forward and backward embeddedness in global value chains. It is found that RTAs deepening sig-nificantly enhances China's forward value chain embeddedness under the general mode of trade and backward embeddedness un-der both modes of trade. The depth of different types of clauses, the mode of value chain embedding, the level of development of contracting partners, and specific industries all have heterogeneous impacts on the value chain embedding effect of RTAs deep-ening.The analysis of the mechanism points out that RTAs deepening promotes the development of trade liberalization and trade facilitation among member countries, reduces trade policy uncertainty, shapes an open, efficient, and stable international trade and investment environment, and then promotes the enhancement of China's embeddedness in the global value chain. The con-clusions of this paper have important policy implications for China's promotion of high-quality FTAs construction and the real-ization of deep value chain participation and status climbing.
