The integrated development of urban and rural areas has practical significance in solving the ma-jor social contradictions in the new era and promoting Chinese path to modernization.Considering the theory and practice,this article proposes a"foundation-process-performance"framework.According to this frame-work,this article clarifies the connotation of integrated development of urban and rural areas in China and builds a multi-index comprehensive evaluation system from a theoretical perspective to measure the inte-grated development of urban and rural areas in China from 1990 to 2022.The results show that the overall inte-grated development of urban and rural areas in China has experienced first slow growth and then rapid growth since 1990.The four major areas(northeastern,eastern,central,and western China)have presented increas-ing differences and club convergence.The geographic spillover effects of integrated development of urban and rural areas are generally greater than the economic spillover effects.According to the results,suggestions are proposed to promote the integrated development of urban and rural areas.The specific suggestions are as fol-lows:strengthening the research on the connotation of integrated development of urban and rural areas;boost-ing rural revitalization and integration of urban and rural systems;coordinating the efforts of the government and the market;planning the coordinated development between regions and the integrated development of ur-ban and rural areas as a whole;promoting high-quality integrated development of urban and rural areas from key points to all areas.
