Mechanism and Effect of Internet Use on Laborers'Income
With the mixed cross-sectional data during 2017-2021 in the Chinese General Social Survey Da-tabase(CGSS),this paper employs propensity score matching and weighting methods to explore how digital skills represented by Internet use affect laborers'income and whether Internet use has a polarization effect or equalization effect. The results show that the income of laborers with high frequency of Internet use is signifi-cantly higher than that of laborers with low frequency of Internet use. With the control of endogeneity, the wage premium of laborers with Internet use is between 19%and 25%.Digital skills have an equalization effect on income.Internet use by laborers can alleviate income inequality in the labor market to a certain extent and re-duce the wage gap caused by gender and urban-rural differences.Meanwhile, digital skills have a polarization effect on income.Internet use by laborers can increase the income premium generated by the traditional hu-man capital of laborers.According to the results,it is essential to cautiously and comprehensively view the ef-fect of digital skills on laborers'income and formulate relevant policies with consideration to vulnerable groups. The findings provide reference for implementing innovation-driven strategies in an accelerated man-ner,safeguarding laborers'rights and interests, and promoting common prosperity.
