The Roles of Depression and Maladaptive Cognition on the Relationship Between Stress and Internet Gaming Disorder Among Junior High School Students
Objective To explorethe mediation effects of depression and maladaptive cognition on the association between stress andinternet gaming disorder(IGD)in junior high school students,which provides scientific the evidence for the decrease in IGD.Methods A cluster sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey on 729 middle school students from five high schools in Fujian Province,using questionnaires such as the Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check-List,Chinese Simplified Depression Scale,Maladaptive Cognition toward Internet Gaming,and Scale if IGD.Results The prevalence rate of IGD was 14.3%in junior high school students in Fujian with male students(17.47%)significantly higher than female students(10.92%).There were gender differences in stress,depression,and maladaptive cognition toward internet gaming.After controlling gender and grade,stress and maladaptive cognition toward internet gaming positively predicted IGD;stress positively predicted depression,while stress and depression positively predicted maladaptive cognition toward internet gaming.Depression and maladaptive cognition toward internet gaming exerted chain mediating effects on the association between stress and IGD,and the mediation effects of depression and maladaptive cognition accounted for 45.08%of the total effect.Conclusion Junior high students should be taught stress reduction techniques and positive awareness of stress to reduce their levels of depression and maladaptive cognition toward internet gaming,which in turn decreases IGD.
