Research progress on the impact of pain catastrophizing on adverse health outcomes in patients with chronic pain
Pain is the fifth most important vital sign after body temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.Nearly half of the world's adults have experienced some form of physical pain, resulting in economic losses of $56 billion to $63.5 billion annually due to chronic pain.According to the course of pain,it is divided into acute pain and chronic pain.Chronic pain is defined by the International Society for Pain Research as pain that exceeds the normal tissue healing time and lasts for more than 3 months.Pain is the result of a combination of physiological, psychological, and social factors, and the catas-trophic nature of pain is considered the most relevant psychological influencing factor related to pain, which has become a research hotspot in the field of pain psychology among European and American scholars in recent years.Individuals experi-encing catastrophic pain may overreact to actual or potential pain, focusing more on pain and experiencing higher levels of pain.If pain related disabilities occur,it can also lead to poor treatment outcomes, which are closely related to the patient's clinical outcomes. This research reviews the impact of catastrophic pain on adverse health outcomes and intervention mea-sures,in order to raise awareness among domestic healthcare professionals about catastrophic pain and provide a basis for improving patient clinical outcomes and chronic pain management.
