Effect of physical exercise atmosphere on depression in middle and high school students:The chain mediating effect of social anxiety and Internet interpersonal addiction
Objective:To examine the effect of the physical exercise atmosphere on depression among middle and high school students,as well as to investigate the mediating effects of social anxiety and internet interpersonal addic-tion.The ultimate goal is to offer practical recommendations for addressing depression in this demographic.Methods:A total of 756 middle and high school students were surveyed by cluster sampling method using the exercise atmos-phere scale,adolescent social anxiety scale,Internet interpersonal addiction scale and depression scale of the epidemi-ological.Results:① Physical exercise atmospherewas significantly negatively correlated with social anxiety,Internet interpersonal addiction and depression(r=-0.236,-0.237,-0.335;P<0.001);②Social anxiety was significantly posi-tively correlated with Internet interpersonal addiction and depression(r=0.339,0.545;P<0.001);③ Internet inter-personal addiction was significantly positively correlated with depression(r=0.287,P<0.001);④ Physical exercise atmosphere had a significant impact on depression through four pathways.Direct effect path:Physical exercise atmos-phere→ Depression;Mediation effect path 1:Physical exercise atmosphere→ Social anxiety→ Depression;Mediation effect path 2:Physical exercise atmosphere→ Internet interpersonal addiction → Depression;Chain mediation effect path:Physical exercise atmosphere→ Social anxiety→ Internet interpersonal addiction → Depression,with the effect values accounting for 61.0%,33.0%,4.3%and 1.4%of the total effect respectively.Conclusion:A supportive atmos-phere for physical activity can decrease social anxiety and Internet interpersonal addiction among middle and high school students,subsequently reducing the likelihood of depression and promoting a positive lifestyle and healthy psychological well-being in these students.
