Investigation of negative emotions in empty nest disabled elderly people under the model of"combination of medical treatment and endowment"and relationship with sleep quality and chronic diseases
Objective:To investigate the negative emotions in empty nest disabled elderly people under the model of"combination of medical treatment and endowment",and to evaluate the relationship with sleep quality and chronic diseases. Methods:A questionnaire survey was conducted on 62 disabled elderly people who were admitted to three medical and nursing institutions in Henan Province from September 2019 to September 2023.The questionnaire in-cluded demographic data questionnaire,Barthel index scale(BI),Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Self-rating De-pression Scale(SDS)and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).62 elderly people finally recovered 61 valid question-naires,with an effective recovery rate of 98.39%.The disabled elderly were divided into negative emotion group and non-negative emotion group by taking SAS score≥50 points and/or SDS score≥53 points as the presence of nega-tive emotions. The general data such as gender, age and chronic diseases were compared between both groups.Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the influencing factors of negative emotion in the disabled elderly in the medical and nursing institutions. The differences in sleep quality were compared between both groups. Results:Among the 61 disabled elderly people in the medical and nursing institutions, there were 24 cases(39.34%)of anxiety and 29 cases(47.54%)of depression,of which 21 cases(34.43%)had both anxiety and depression. The rate of no visitation of children, relatives and friends(Fisher's exact probability,P<0.05)and the proportions of cerebrovascular diseases(x2=4.035,P<0.05)and severe disability(x2=6.726,P<0.05)in negative emotion group were higher than those in non-negative emotion group(P<0.05).Logistic regression analysis showed that no visitation of children, relatives and friends(OR=2.818,95%CI:1.473~5.392),cerebrovascular diseases(OR=2.627,95%CI:1.273~5.423)and severe disability(OR=3.466,95%CI:1.953~6.150)were risk factors for negative emotions in disabled elderly peo-ple(all P<0.05).The time to fall asleep, sleep efficiency PSQI scores and PSQI total score were higher negative e-motion group than those in non-negative emotion group(t=2.892,3.118,3.498,P<0.05).Conclusion:No visitation of children, relatives and friends, chronic cerebrovascular diseases and severe disability may increase the risk of nega-tive emotions in disabled elderly people in medical and nursing institutions, and the negative emotions of disabled eld-erly people are closely related to sleep quality.
