On the Fundamental Differences Between Chinese and Western Philosophy
In March 2004,the Journal of Social Sciences of Jilin University introduced the special column"Exploring the Path of Contemporary Chinese Philosophy".This was the first column in the domestic periodicals to propose promoting and guiding the conceptual innovation of contemporary Chinese philosophy, and to explore and create the form of contempo-rary Chinese philosophy with Chinese characteristics. With the past two decades'perseverance and exploration,contem-porary Chinese philosophy scholars share a common pursuit of constructing and developing Chinese philosophy with a fo-cus on its originality and subjectivity. It is important to note that we have entered a new historic juncture in China's development, which requires a new theoretical approach to exploring the path of contemporary Chinese philosophy. In the face of the complicated and real world history,we must constantly examine the connotation, orientation and develop-ment direction of contemporary Chinese philosophy. In the third decade of the 21st century,it is necessary to redefine the relationship between contemporary Chinese philosophy and world civilization. This will open up a new horizon for the comparison between Chinese Philosophy and Western philosophy. It is important to constantly inquire into the chan-ges of Chinese philosophy in the past and present, and to promote fundamental theoretical research and a paradigm shift in contemporary Chinese philosophy. In line with the above mentioned first special column 20 years ago, issue of this journal entitled"Comparison and Paradigm Shift",for which we have invited a number of well-known scholars to dis-cuss the unity of nationhood and humanity, the differences between the basic establishments of Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy, and the paradigm shift in the study of Marxist and Western philosophy in order to"Continue the Dialogue"on the issue that we started 20 years ago.
