Significant Factors Influencing Charitable Donations:A Comparative Study of Education and Income Levels
This paper examines the influence of education and income levels on the charitable donations among Chi-nese individuals.It is commonly believed that income is the most significant factor affecting charitable donations in Chi-na.However,through the data analysis of the 2012 China General Social Survey(CGSS),this paper finds that without separating education and income levels,both factors have a significantly positive impact on charitable donations.Where-as,when controlling the factor of education to independently study the impact of income on charitable donations,it is found that the influence of income becomes insignificant.In contrast,education level still has a significantly positive im-pact on charitable donations.This result indicates that level of education is the key factor influencing charitable dona-tions,and the apparent correlation between income level and charitable donations is essentially derived from the influence of education,having no significant impact on charitable donations.Therefore,to enhance public donations in China,to promote development of philanthropy and the Third Distribution,and to ultimately achieve common prosperity,it could be both feasible and crucial to further improve the level of education for the public and to promote charity education widely in schools of all levels.
