The Triggers and Phasic Features of Chinese Consonant Palatization
The distribution of Mandarin Chinese lingual consonants[t(c)],[t(c)h],[(c)]contradicts western phoneme theories, which has sparked a century-long academic debate. The palatalization of Chinese consonants has triggers and phasic-specific characteristics, but previous scholars have not paid enough attention to this in their discussions.Based on the phonological literature and modem dialects, this paper attempts to analyze the nature and characteristics of palatal-ization of consonants in many languages in combination with the universality of palatalization of consonants in many lan-guages.It is proposed that ignoring the triggers and phases when examining the palatalization of consonants will lead to misjudgment of the process of sound change to a certain extent, and hence it is impossible to gain insight into the essence of palatalization in Mandarin Chinese.
