The Mechanism of Self-Control in Sports Performance:An Analysis of Research Progress Based on the Strength Model of Self-Control
The study of self-control has been a long history. There is a relatively unified consensus in the theoretical field that self-control produces a kind of exhausting and unpleasant psychological experience, because self-control requires effort to inhibit certain reactions and behavioral tendencies. In the field of self-control research, the strength model of self-control is the most influential theoretical hypothesis. It argues that self-control is like muscular exertion, relying on the limited resources(energy)in the body.Performing self-control tasks leads to the depletion of resources in the body or even exhaustion.Although this re-source is restorable, these resources will be significantly reduced in the short term after performing consecutive tasks, thereby af-fecting the performance of subsequent tasks.Individuals will demonstrate different self-control strengths when facing self-con-trol tasks.Long-term training and application of strategies can improve people's ability to manage these resources.Among them, the exercise of willpower is the key to improve self-control ability. This article summarizes the application research on sports per-formance,persistence in sports, and impulse regulation in competitive sports through the strength model of self-control,and simply summarizes the intervention strategies for restoring self-control ability,in order to provide reference suggestions for improving ath-letes'sports performance.
