A Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Traditional Chinese Exercises on Physical Function and Muscle Mass in Middle-Aged and Elderly Patients with Sarcopenia
Objective:To systematically evaluate the effect of TCE on the improvement of physical function and muscle mass in middle-aged and elderly patients with sarcopenia. Methods:CNKI,Web of Science,PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Library,Wanfang and VIP databases were searched for randomized controlled trials of the effects of TCE on middle-aged and elderly pa-tients with sarcopenia from January 1,2010 to August 31,2024.Two researchers independently screened the data in strict accord-ance with the inclusion criteria, extracted data, completed quality evaluation, and performed meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3.Results:A total of 21 studies involving 1162 patients were included.Meta-analysis showed that TCE could effectively improve grip strength[MD=0.41,95%CI(0.26,0.56),P<0.00001],six-meter speed[MD=0.14,95%CI(0.10,0.18),P<0.00001],stand-up and walking timed test(TUGT)[MD=-1.14,95%CI(-1.45,-0.82),P<0.00001],and chair sit-up[MD=2.56,95%CI(2.09,3.03),P<0.00001],Mini-Fitness Status Scale(SPPB)[MD=1.46,95%CI(0.59,2.33),P=0.0010],Fall Efficacy Scale(MFES)[MD=1.77,95%CI(1.21,2.33),P<0.00001],Balance Function[MD=0.88,95%CI(0.58,1.18),P<0.00001],knee extensor muscle strength[MD=0.38,95%CI(0.06,0.71),P=0.02],knee flexor muscle strength[MD=0.41,95%CI(0.09,0.74),P=0.01],but had no effect on total skeletal muscle mass(SMM)[MD=1.09,95%CI(-0.49,2.67),P=0.17],upper limb muscle mass(UMM)[MD=0.08,95%CI(-0.04,0.19),P=0.18],lower limb muscle mass(LMM)[MD=0.23,95%CI(-0.03,0.50),P=0.09]had no significant effect. Conclusion:TCE can effectively improve the physical function of middle-aged and elderly pa-tients with sarcopenia, but has no significant effect on improving muscle mass, and further verification is needed for further re-search.
