Domestic Objects and Foreign Goods:A Study of Everyday Items of Late Qing Dynasty Jiangnan Residents through Illustrations in"Dianshizhai Pictorial"
In the general perspective of material culture research, the study of artifacts rarely involves the daily lives of ordinary people and often focuses on the objects themselves.Using the images from the"Dianshizhai Pictorial"as basic historical material, this study examines the daily life in the Jiangnan region during the late Qing Dynasty, focusing on the details of everyday scenes. From the perspective of image interpretation, the clothing, food, housing, and daily life in the Jiangnan region during the late Qing appear harmonious and peaceful. The images of artifacts, disseminated through popular media(pictorials),embody their own aesthetic logic. With the strong influx of Western material civilization, the consumption of foreign goods evolved from a fashion trend to practical use.In the context of"modernity",the people and events surrounding old objects appear antiquated and conservative.
