Chinese characters are opaque in phonology. The cognitive function of Pinyin transcoding on L2 Chinese listening comprehension is an important theoretical issue in L2 Chinese teaching.A total of 138 college students who speak Chinese as a second language in China were selected to investigate the relationships among Chinese Pinyin, character production and L2 Chinese listening comprehension by path analysis.Pinyin transcoding test includes both auditory(Pinyin dictation)and visual(to write Pinyin by reading Chinese characters)channels. The results are as follows.(1)Phonetic-Pinyin transcoding is easi-er in auditory channel than character-Pinyin transcoding in visual channel, and there is a deep correlation between the two transcoding skills.(2)Both skills have a significant impact on L2 Chinese listening comprehension, and the paths are adjust-ed by Chinese proficiency and L1 language background.Auditory transcoding has a significant impact at the primary and inter-mediate stages, while visual transcoding starts to show a significant impact at the intermediate stage, and the effects of two transcoding skills converge at the advanced stage but still have a significant impact on character production. In terms of L1 lan-guage background,Pinyin transcoding of students from the Chinese character cultural circle mainly affects listening compre-hension through visual transcoding and character production channels, while students from non-Chinese character cultural cir-cle mainly go through the auditory transcoding pathway.(3)The analysis of influence sources shows that the influence of Pin-yin transcoding on listening comprehension mainly comes from sophisticated onset-rime units and tones. Our findings indicate that Pinyin transcoding ability has an important influence on L2 Chinese listening comprehension, which should be paid atten-tion to in Chinese Pinyin teaching for its quality and continuity.
