The relationship between overseas Chinese children's literacy and their reading proficiency:An analysis based on the Heritage Chinese Proficiency Reading Test
This study focuses on a sample of 404 overseas Chinese children with an average age of 10 years and utilizes their scores on Heritage Chinese Proficiency Level 3 Reading Test as the primary data source.The research examines the relation-ship between their Chinese literacy skills(including character form recognition,character sound recognition,and character meaning recognition)and their reading proficiency.The results show that:(1)there is a strong correlation between literacy skills and reading proficiency,with literacy skills serving as a significant factor influencing reading proficiency;(2)charac-ter form recognition,character sound recognition,and character meaning recognition all contributed significantly to reading proficiency.Among these,character meaning recognition contributed the most to reading proficiency,followed by character form recognition,and character sound recognition contributed the least.Based on the research outcomes,the study provides relevant suggestions for the Chinese language teaching practices for overseas Chinese children.
