Visual narrative not only reflects the advancement of society and technology, but also continuously redefines human perception and communication. This paper aims to systematically review the theoretical foundations and developmental trajectory of visual narrative, integrating its research framework while exploring its future potential. The theoretical basis of visual narrative is rooted in the spatial turn of Western structuralism and postmodern literature,as well as studies in iconography and semiotics.Based on the emergence and popularity of related concepts, this study divides visual narrative research into three periods:the Pre-Visual Narrative Era(1766-1966),the Classical and Post-Classical Visual Narrative Era(1969-1997),and the Contemporary and Future Visual Narrative Era(2003-present).The findings reveal that with the rapid evolution of communication media, visual narrative research has become increasingly diverse and interdisciplinary, offering new perspectives for addressing social issues and resolving future challenges in the field of design.
