Since China's reform and opening-up,the swift progression of urbanization and the reform of the housing system have led to substantial restructurings in urban and rural community spaces, making"community het-erogeneity"a key characteristic of the residential space structure of grassroots communities in China.Community residential space differentiation influences the subjective well-being of the elderly through community engagement and public services.By utilizing the 2018 CLASS data, this paper employs propensity score matching to investigate the effects of different community types on elderly well-being and the mediating role of community engagement. The results reveal discernible differences in elderly subjective well-being across community types.Notably, within urban areas, elderly well-being is significantly lower in commodity housing communities compared to work-unit and neigh-borhood communities. The study finds that community engagement markedly affects elderly well-being.Specifi-cally,political participation serves as a mediating factor between residential spatial differentiation and well-being,whereas the mediating role of non-political participation is not evident.Consequently,to enhance the subjective well-being of elderly residents, efforts should focus on boosting community participation by organizing activities and fos-tering community self-governance.This approach will support the construction of a social governance system charac-terized by"co-building,co-governing and sharing together"in the New Era.
