The Subtitle Translation of Fantasy Animated Series Yao-Chinese Folktalesfrom the Perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis
As a multimodal carrier that integrates symbols such as sound, images, and text, animation is an indispensable medium for cross-cultural communication, and the role of subtitle translation in this process is crucial.By adopting multimodal discourse analysis as a theoretical framework, the present paper systematically examines the subtitle translation of the fantasy animation Yao-Chinese Folktales from four levels:culture, context, content and expression. It explores how subtitle translation can bridge cultural divides and effectively convey the profound significance. The research finds that the coordinated action of non-verbal elements such as visual and auditory cues with textual language is indispensable for deepening audience's cultural understanding and emotional experience. Therefore,in the subtitle translation, translators should consider the multimodal features of the animation and the differences between the source and target language cultures.Flexible translation strategies, such as literal and free translation, can be employed to ensure the accurate conveyance of information and proper expression of emotions, thereby promoting the cross-cultural transmission of domestic animations.
