On the Social Background of the Rise of the Reclusive Style in the Early Song Dynasty
In the early Song Dynasty, under the relatively stable background, the trend of seclusion did not decline, but became a temporary trend, which was a special existence in the history of Chinese seclusion.Investigation of its social background shows that there were three main factors affecting this social trend of thought.First, the seclusion of the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties made the idea of seclusion popular, and the life consciousness and living attitude of the literati did not change with the change of the dynasties.Second,Buddhism and Taoism were recognized and encouraged, scholars and hermits used Buddhism and Taoism to cultivate their minds, sought for sustenance in the mountains and forests with a leisurely and plain mind, and enjoyed a free and unfettered life.Third, the royal court gave preferential treatment to hermits, affirmed their life behavior and value, improved their social reputation and status, resulting in an atmosphere of respecting seclusion.
