Anatomical study of flexor digitorum superficialis tendons in carpal tunnel
Objective To illuminate the topographical anatomy of the four flexor digitorum superficialis(FDS)tendons in carpal tunnel and its variation in Chinese Population. Methods Eighty-eight cases of formalin-fixed upper limbs of forty-four adult cadavers were investigated carefully. The carpal tunnels were dissected in detail, the position and arrangement relationship of each structure were observed and recorded, and illustrations were drawn. The proportion of various arrangement relationships was statistically analyzed. Results Six types of arrange-ments of four FDS tendons were found. The four FDS tendons arranged in parallel from little finger to index finger ac-counted for 14%.The middle and ring finger tendons located on the surface of index and little finger tendons account-ed for 30%.About 2%exhibited the middle and index finger tendons lying on the surface of ring and little finger ten-dons.About 35%were that middle finger tendon and median nerve located superficial to the other finger tendons. The index, middle and ring finger tendons superficial to little finger tendon was observed in 4%.The remaining 15%was that middle and little finger tendons lied between index and ring finger tendons. One case(2%)of tendon varia-tion of the little finger of superficial flexor digitorum. Conclusion Master the anatomical knowledge of the superfi-cial flexor tendon in the carpal tunnel, which can better understand the movement of the second to fifth fingers. And hand surgeons need to understand this anatomical knowledge for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
