Body surface area and basal metabolic rate of Wa nationality in China
Objective:In order to understand the body surface area(BSA)and basal metabolic rate(BMR)of the Wa nationality of China. Methods:The stature and weight of 1 009 Wa adults(including 499 males and 510 females)from Yunnan province were investigated according to the Anthropometric Methods. The BSA data were calculated according to the Yu formula, and the BMR was calculated according to the Mifflin MD formula. The data were statistically analyzed using Excel 2003 and SPSS 19.0.Results:The BMR of Wa adult males was(1 389.5±137.3)kcal/d,and the BSA was(1.608 8±0.126 1)m2.The BMR of Wa adult females was(1 089.1±132.9)kcal/d,and the BSA was(1.478 3±0.131 9)m2.There was a significant negative correlation between age and BMR.Both males and females showed a highly significant positive correlation between the BMR and BSA.The variance analysis difference of indicators among different age groups of Wa adults was statistically significant. The BMR and BSA of males were higher than those of females in the same age group. Conclusion:The BMR and BSA of Wa adult males are similar to those of Sherpas and Khmus, and those of Wa adult females are similar to those of Bajia. It can provide a preliminary attempt for revising the recommended energy intake value for Chinese people.
