The development paths of academic societies can generally be divided into communication, think tank, science popularization,industry-academic integration, and comprehensive development paths.Different societies within the same discipline exhibit differences in their development paths. The foundational and dynamic capabilities of societies have a significant impact on the differentiated development paths of engineering academic societies. After examining five renowned engineering academic societies, both domestically and internationally, the research team found that in terms of foundational capabilities, regulated management ability determines the healthy and orderly development of the society, and resource management ability influences the path choices during the initial and developmental stages of the society. In terms of dynamic capabilities, the perception ability of a society determines its awareness and effectiveness in reform and innovation;the resource acquisition ability influences the richness of the society's endogenous resources. The foundational and dynamic capabilities of a society can be combined to enhance the society's sustainable development capabilities.Hence, society is advised to pick different development paths that fit their developmental stage and specific context considering the differences in capabilities, integrate and streamline resources, solidify foundational capabilities, establish a dynamic capability concept, and break path dependence to achieve high-quality development.
