Sino-US Game over South China Sea in 1950s and 1960s
In the period of 1950s and 1960s,as the United States pursued the strategy of containment against the People's Republic of China, the two countries were engaged in a fierce conflict with respect to the South China Sea.Before and after the San Francisco Peace Conference(1951),China and the US had a series of struggles over how to deal with the islands in the South China Sea.The US-led peace treaty finally dealt with the attribution problem of the South China Sea islands in a vague way.Afterwards,on one hand, the US supported the Republic of Vietnam and the Philippines in infringing upon the sovereignty of China in the South China Sea;and on the other hand, the US tried to push them to work together a-gainst China.Under such circumstances,China issued several statements opposing the US-supported invasion of the islands in the South China Sea by the Republic of Vietnam and the Philippines.Besides,China took a series of counter measures against US's repeated violation of China's rights and interests in this region, including"serious warnings"through diplomatic state-ments,protests through ambassadorial-level talks and strengthening governance of the islands in the South China Sea.Those activities have not only safeguarded China's legitimate rights in the South China Sea,but also ensured the continuity of China's jurisdiction of the South China Sea islands, providing a legal basis for China today to protect its legitimate rights in the South China Sea.
