Another Examination on Selection and Compilation of Seven Military Classics
The academic origin of the Seven Military Classics,which was selected and compiled during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of Song Dynasty,was the"Various Arts of War"defined by Emperor Renzong and Emperor Yingzong,rather than the Seven Art of War Books in Imperial Readings of the Taiping Era:Compendium of Classics and History Books.It was not Zhu Fu or He Qufei but Emperor Shenzong who played the leading role in making selections for the Seven Military Classics.Emperor Shenzong's respect for Li Jing's military strategy and his emphasis on formations,drills and training were the key reasons why Questions and Replies between Tang Taizong and Li Weigong and Wei Liaozi were included in the selection.The compilation of the Seven Military Classics fol-lowed a relatively reasonable and unified standard and conformed to the needs of the standardization of military ed-ucation.It helped promote the development of ancient military theories and well deserves full recognition and affir-mation.
