CPC Military Work Groups behind Enemy Lines in Shandong during War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression
With the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression entering the stalemate stage, the situation in Hebei-Shandong Border region deteriorated. In the summer of 1942,the Communist Party of China began to form military work groups behind enemy lines in Shandong. These groups were lean, capable and flexible and organized various actions. They were an assault force to fight in enemy-occupied areas.Their main task was to crack down, strive for,and disintegrate puppet troops and puppet organizations and their goal was to publicize and organize the masses,to establish grass-roots party organi-zations and anti-Japanese political power, and to turn enemy-occupied areas into guerrilla areas and then into covert guerrilla base areas. In the later period of the Resistance War,the military work groups expanded their activity areas, strengthened their equipment and team building, and launched"underground operations"against the Japanese North China Special Police Force in strategic key areas such as the city suburbs, mines and along railways. They became vanguards fighting in the border areas and infiltrating into strategic areas.Military work groups behind the enemy lines in Shandong played an important role in persisting in the War of Resistance, restoring and expanding base areas, and preparing for the counterattack against Japanese aggression.
