Chiang Kai-shek's Shaping and Utilization of"Warlord"Concept While in Mainland
Influenced by Dr.Sun Yat-sen and driven by the domestic situation,Chiang Kai-shek formed the basic cogni-tion of the concept of"warlord".With the continuous rise of his personal status,Chiang was constantly shaping and flexibly applying the concept in order to strike his opponents,to build legitimacy and to resist Japanese aggression.Chiang's employ-ment of the"warlord"concept was successful in the course of crushing the Beiyang regime and putting down KMT local forces.He also achieved certain success using the concept of"Japanese warlord"to mobilize resistance against Japanese ag-gression.But Chiang's thought concerning"warlord"and his disdain for military politics and system construction made it diffi-cult for him to really get rid of the"warlord nature"of the KMT army and led to his final loss of power in the Mainland.The study of Chiang Kai-shek's shaping and utilization of the concept of"warlord"may deepen the understanding of the interac-tive mode of his power and concept,as well as the understanding of Chiang's ideological and political means.
