Squad of Foreign Troops Led by Frederick Townsend Ward,A Picture Mistaken
There was a mistake about the picture Squad of Foreign Troops Led by Frederick Townsend Ward, which was used in the exhibition of"Road to Rejuvenation"in the National Museum of China. It first appeared in Far East,a magazine published in Shanghai in July of 1877,but the figures in the picture were actually not Frederick Townsend Ward and his squad of foreign troops. It was another photo called"Cooke and Ningbo County Guards"taken by J.C.Watson.Several other pictures of Watson,Cooke and Ningbo County Guards in Edward Bangs Drew family album of photographs of China stored in Harvard-Yenching Institute Library as well as pictures of the same scene in US Library of Congress further prove that the ar-mymen in the pictures were indeed Ningbo County Guards. It can thus be seen that audio-visual historical materials also need to be clearly examined before they can be used for historical research and exhibition.
