Japanese Military's Change of Attitude toward Zhang Zuolin(1922-1928)
In the process when Zhang Zuolin,a warlord of the Fengtian clique, was gaining domination of Northeast Chi-na,Japan offered him a lot of help. After Zhang became the commanding chief of Northeast China,Japan began to take advan-tage of him to seize more aggression interests and the relationship between Japan and Zhang became closer. As Zhang grew in power,so did his desire to break free from Japan's control. In the 1920s,their relationship became more complicated, and the attitude of the Japanese military towards Zhang showed a trend of dynamic change.During the two wars between Zhili-FengtianWars,Japan supported Zhang in secret through covert means;during Guo Songling's mutiny,Japan openly supported Zhang;during the Northern Expedition War,Japan showed its intention to abandon Zhang. The Kwantung Army, the van-guard in the invasion of China, was more aggressive and got rid of him by means of assassination. The Japanese military's atti-tude towards Zhang depended on whether he could secure and expand Japan's"special rights and interests in Manchuria and Mongolia".If yes,Zhang would be protected;if not,he would be discarded.
