A Political Philosophical Interpretation of"Fair Opportunity"and"Equal Opportunity"
As a political philosophical concept, the"opportunity"in"fair opportunity"should refer to the possible conditions for existence and development provided by a country or society to all or specific members of society, rather than the general"opportunities"often mentioned in daily life."Equal opportunity"or"fair opportunity"involves the issues of whether to provide opportunities, how to provide them, under what time and conditions to provide them, and to which members of society."Equal opportunity"is an ideal worth pursuing at a specific historical stage of humansociety, but today there are irresolvable contradictions in dealing with both the issues of"having opportunities or not"and"big or small opportunities"."Fair opportunity"is an ideal more worth pursuing. It does not seek the strict identity and uniformity required by"equal opportunity",but allows for more differentiated treatment."Fair opportunity"also has its own limits;it is only one aspect of social fairness and a focus for promoting social fairness. One cannot expect"fair opportunity"alone to accomplish the mission of social fairness, let alone equate"fair opportunity"with social fairness.
