On the Modernized Transformation and Ethical Reconstruction of Chinese Extended Families
The transition of traditional families to modern families is one of the core issues in the field of family sociology. The classic theory of family modernization conceptualizes tradition as antithetical to modernity, overlooking both the positive functions of extended families in modern society and their potential for creative transformation and reconstruction through innovative family practices.Chinese families, during their rapid modernization, exhibit characteristics that integrate traditional and modern elements. On one hand, contemporary Chinese families selectively maintain the close intergenerational relationships and the family function of mutual support in extended families. On the other hand, they have gradually abandoned the traditional extended family's emphasis on hierarchy, order, and authority, effectively incorporating modern principles of independence and equality. This mixed family model, which integrates traditional and modern elements, should neither be simply viewed as a transitional phase in the evolution from tradition to modernity, nor merely as a special stage of family development within a"compressed"modernization process. The current Chinese family model is likely to persist and continue evolving in the future.
