"Escaping from Academic Career?"—Family Socioeconomic Background and Academic Career Choices of Doctoral Students
Doctoral students are the main reserve group for pursuing academic careers, and exploring the current situation of doctoral students'academic career choices is of great significance for improving the employ-ment quality of doctoral students and optimizing their academic career structure. This paper focuses on the influ-ence of family socioeconomic background on doctoral students'career choice, and conducts empirical analysis on 10,274 doctoral students nationwide in 2021.It is found that the higher the annual family income level is,the higher the probability of doctoral students choosing non-academic careers;compared with those whose parents are not, those whose parents are professional technicians have a higher probability of choosing postdoctoral posi-tions.Further,the mediating effect analysis shows that children from high-income families choose to escape from academic careers due to their demand for higher-paying jobs and employment in big cities. The direct effect of family background on the career choice of humanities and social sciences PhDs is not significant, and the in-fluence on their academic career choice is mediated by the variables such as career orientation, employment loca-tion,and salary status;the better family background of a PhD in science and engineering, the higher the proba-bility of choosing a non academic profession.Overall, the attractiveness of academic careers to doctoral students from advantageous family with socioeconomic backgrounds is declining;against the background of saturation of elite academic positions in first-tier cities,PhD students from advantageous families are employed in non-aca-demic sectors in first-tier cities.
