Research on Internet Expression of Modern Chinese from a Multi-modal Perspective
Most of the research on Internet language has been text-based,but in reality, the expression of In-temet language is becoming increasingly close to real life and in multi-modal forms. This study, from a multi-modal perspective, utilizes a multi-modal discourse analysis framework to investigate the internetization process of modern Chinese from three aspects:modality selection, structural configuration, and modal relationships. The study shows that one of the reasons why Internet language is widely used is its significant symbolic nature, which essentially reflects the return of linguistics to semiotics. The selection and use of symbol resources other than linguistic texts are a powerful verification of the multi-modality of Internet language. The determination of modality needs to be analyzed in specific contexts, with non-verbal modalities playing an increasingly important role. From the perspective of structural configuration, language modality remains the main body of Internet lan-guage,highlighting emotional characteristics in content. However, with the development of Internet technology, people's visual senses are further stimulated, and an"image+"form is becoming a new configuration of Internet expression, carrying more and more meanings. Finally,in terms of modal relationships, various modalities of In-ternet expression mainly present complementary relationships.Although the forms of different modes vary, they are all aimed at reflecting the overall meaning of the communicator and achieving more effective information ex-change.
