Defining a Digital Journalist:Using"Journalistic Expertise"as a Yardstick
Who can be called a digital journalist in the digital age? There are two ways to define dig-ital journalists:the technical way and the network way.The former regards technology as practical process; The latter focuses on the multiple participants of communication activities in the digital envi-ronment,but the research has not been able to define the category of digital journalists.Examining the use of expertise in practical activities further clarifies the boundaries of digital journalists.Jour-nalistic expertise in the digital age includes three dimensions:skill, sociocultural and ethical,corre-sponding to skill expertise, interactive expertise and ethical expertise respectively.A digital journalist can only be considered a digital journalist if he or she uses all three types of journalistic expertise simultaneously in his or her practical activities, thus breaking through the professional perspective. At the same time, this definition can include technical objects into the scope of the practice of digital journalists, rebutting the usual human-centered definition method.
