Ultrastructure observation of the mouthparts, antennae, and sensilla of Senmanotus bifasciatus adults
[Objective]As an important borer pest of Cupressus spp.,antennae and mouthparts of Senmanotus bifasciatus are closely related to its harmful characteristics.Understanding the types and distribution positions of mouthparts and antennal sensilla would provide scientific basis for the study of the interaction mechanism between S.bifasciatus adults and host plants.[Method]The types and distribution of mouthparts, antennae and their sensilla of S.bifasciatus adults were observed by the scanning electron microscope.[Result]There were six types of sensilla identified from mouthparts of adults, including sensilla chaetica(sc),sensilla basiconca(sb),sensilla gemmiformium(sg),sensilla plate(sp),sensilla styloconica(ss),and sensillum squamiformium(sq). Also, there were six types of sensilla on the antennae, including sensilla chaetica(sc),campaniform sensillum(cs),Bobhm's mane(Bob),sensilla trichodea(st),sb:sensilla basiconca(sb),and sensilla styloconica(ss). There was no difference in the sensilla between males and females on both mouthparts and antennae.[Conclusion]The study clarified the types and distribution positions of mouthparts and antennal sensilla, and there was no significant difference between male and female, providing basic data for exploring the mechanism of seeking and locating host plants in S.bifasciatus adults.
