The Discrimination of the Explanation of Wei("为")in Jing Zhuan Shi Ci
Although the merits and limitations of Jing Zhuan Shi Ci(经传释词)in the study of functional words have been widely discussed by previous researchers, yet there remains a lack of comprehensive and detailed analysis of its senses and example sentences. This paper scrutinizesWei(为),an lexeme encapsulating numerous senses,to validate the appropriateness of sentence analyses and the rationale behind the interpretation of senses. It is argued that the interpretation of the five senses, namely Yong(犹用也),Shi(犹使也),Ze(犹则也),Yu(犹与也)and You(犹 有也)lacks reasonability. While the establishment of senses of Yu(犹于也),Wei(犹谓 也),and Yuzhu(语 助也)is plausible, errors permeate their respective example sentence analyses. The paper also delves into the origins of three senses Jiang(犹将也),Ru(犹如也)and Yuzhu(语助也)from a diachronic perspective.
