The Hierarchy and Openness of the Global Science System:An Analysis Based on Chinese Scholars'International Mobility and Knowledge Production
A review of the theoretical research into the global science system shows that the global science system can be viewed as a dual-structure system where hierarchy and openness coexist.Based on this theory, this study proposes a hypothesis that international mobility and those countries flowing to the core of the global science system have a weakening influence on the knowledge production of Chinese scholars.Based on the data on the international mobility and publications of academic talents from China's four"double world-class"universities,and the flowing generation and its interactions with the types and areas of mobility added to the regression model, the authors verify the aforesaid hypothesis in the dimensions of time and space. This reveals that the core-periphery hierarchical structure in the global science system exerts a decreasing influence on the knowledge production of Chinese scholars;with the openness of the global science system,China tends to be likely to rise in the global science system and shift to the core position.
