The Layout of Higher Education Agglomeration and Its Effect on Regional Innovation——An Empirical Study Based on Chinese and American Data
The layout of higher education agglomeration is an important foundation for the support of innovative growth and the construction of the highlands of innovation.Based on the panel data of China's provinces and America's states, this study explores the layouts of higher education agglomeration in these two countries and their effects on regional innovation. The results show the following:The layout of agglomeration is a common feature of higher education in China and America, but China has less agglomerated higher education institutions than America;America features the"synergistic agglomeration"of higher education institutions at all similar levels, while China features the high-degree agglomeration of higher education institutions at high levels;the layout of higher education agglomeration has a significantly positive effect on regional innovation, and varies according to education and economic growth at different levels, and higher education agglomeration in different stages. With the development of regional economy, the effect of the scale of postgraduate education within a province(state)on regional innovation tends to change from a negative effect to a positive effect, while the effect of the scale of college and junior college education in the province(state)on regional innovation tends to change from a positive effect to a negative effect;and in the top 20%regions,the proportion of the scale of college and junior college education nationwide shows an inverted U-shaped correlation with regional innovation, while the proportion of the scale of postgraduate education nationwide shows a U-shaped correlation with regional innovation. To accelerate the building of an important talent center across the world and a highland of innovation,we need to strengthen the layout of higher education agglomeration, develop a mode of"higher education center"that synergizes college education, postgraduate education,doctoral-degree education and junior college education, and promote the coordination of the layout of higher education agglomeration with both regional socioeconomic development and the regional distribution of the economy, population, and innovation.
