From"Strangers"to a"Community":the Shift of Supervisor-postgraduate Relationship at Universities
The high-quality supervisor-student relationship is an important nourishment for the growth of postgraduates. In practice, the"strangers"relationship between supervisors and students is quite common, and the communication between them has become, more or less,a"cold intimacy"based on benefit calculation, which leads to some problems, such as the"for others"moral"suspension",the alienation of instrumental rationality from academic logic, and the exclusion of benefit caused by egoistic calculation. The transformation of the"strangers"relationship to community is a must for the high-quality development of postgraduate education in China. In the academic domain, the supervisor-student community is based on realistic situation, community ideological resources, and the hypothesis that humanity transcends the single mode and traditional education, which presents itself as a"supervisor-student complex community"and is a"four-fold interactive community"consisting of different, academic, beneficial, and growing aspects. To realize the transformation to the complex community,it is urgent that we should reach an ideological consensus for the four-fold community construction, provide sufficient institutional supply and set up a solid ethical foundation.
