A Comparison of the Morality and Interests Viewpoints between Fan Li and Li Si——Taking Records of the Grand Historiano The Family of King Goujian of Yue andBiographies of Li Si as examples
The relationship between morality and interests has always been an important topic in pre-Qin philosophy.Fan Li,a high-ranking official of the state of Yue in the late Spring and Autumn Period,preserves his own purity and integrity and upholds moral principles;Li Si,the prime minister of the Qin Dynasty,chooses profit instead of righteousness,and"makes a fortune on his own".The difference between the two lies not only in their vastly different choices but also in the reflection of the decline of the pre-Qin"moral"spirit.By comparing the morality and interests viewpoints of Fan Li and Li Si,and examining the basic connotations of their views,this paper reveals their historical influence and practical significance.
