Conversational implicature in selected lines of Downton Abbey
In light of both pragmatics and stylistic, this paper, based on Grice's Cooperative Principle theory, intends to reveal the conversational implicatures of the lines in Downton Abby by evaluating the text with the four Maxims of Cooperative Principle, and discover the relationship of its stylistic features and its surrounding social environment. It is found that, in this drama, the stylistic features of the selected lines are produced not only to present the character's personalities, the development of the plots, but also to reflect the social background and the spirit of that special time.
