On the evolution of Ming and Qing mandarin from the perspective of commonly used wordsTaking"chi(吃/喫)/he(喝)"and"xun(寻)/zhao(找)"as examples
The competition and evolution of northern and southern mandarin in the Ming and Qing Dynasties has been a hot topic of discussion in the academic community,and many existing achieve-ments have been devoted to exploring phonology or cultural and historical aspects.This article attempts to examine the competitive evolution of northern and southern mandarin during the Ming and Qing Dynas-ties from the perspective of commonly used words.It is revealed that the evolution of two commonly used words are similar.New words,all originated from the north,launched an attack on old words in the 18th century,and replaced old words in the late 19th century.The replacement of old words by new words can be seen as a microcosm of the competition and evolution of north south mandarin.This is in line with some conclusions drawn from the perspectives of literature and history or phonology.Research can prove studying the evolution of northern and southern mandarin in the Ming and Qing Dynasties from the per-spective of commonly used words is also a path.
